10-4 February Safety Brief
Safe Driving in Construction Zones
When was the last time you seriously considered how safely you were driving in a construction zone? Safe driving is critical anytime you are on the road, but you need to be extra cautious when driving through a construction area. Here’s a few tips for staying safe when driving through a construction zone:
Pay Attention to the Signs
It is vital to notice and obey road signs in areas of construction. While these signs are mostly all orange in color each sign will warn you about something different. Some common signs are: speed reductions, bumps in the road, lane closures, frequent stops and other conditions that may create a hazardous situation. Following each sign in a construction zone is critical to avoiding an accident. These signs are not suggestions. While it may seem basic, following these signs can save lives.
Stay Calm
Driving through a construction zone can be stressful. When we see caution signs indicating road work ahead it can cause frustration and you may begin to wonder how this will impact your trip? Keep in mind that everyone else must deal with the same delays. Having a little extra patience will help you remain safe while driving through a construction zone.
Always Follow Speed Limits
You will always be safer following the posted speed limit. In construction zones, it’s especially important to follow the speed limit. Speeds will be lowered in construction zones to make sure that workers, drivers and pedestrians stay safe. Remember to leave enough space between you and the vehicle ahead of you to allow room for sudden decreases in speed or suddenly stops, you will need that extra space.
Avoid Distractions & Stay Focused
Driving through a construction zone requires your full attention. Driving responsibly and attentively at all times is fundamental in a commercial vehicle. It is key to avoid distractions like the radio and cellphones while in a work zone. A little extra precaution will go a long way in keeping you and everyone around you safe
